Best Sandwiches in the Wilmington Delaware vicinity
Sometimes you just want a great sandwich. Fortunately you won't have to go far if you live in northern Delaware. After spending a summer checking out the different sandwiches recommended by various foodie friends, these are the ones that I found mouth watering in the greater Wilmington area. If your favorite isn't there, let me know as I want to check it out!
The Steak Tip Sandwich at The Meat House, Route 202 (Concord Pike) one mile north of the DE line at 200 Wilmington West Chester Pike, Chadds Ford PA 19317. Their signature marinated Meat House Steak Tips and a special Cheese Sauce with your choice of Peppers, Onion, and Mushrooms on a toasted Hoagie Roll - warning you will need more than three napkins - but it's worth the mess.
The Porchetta at Gaudiello's Deli, 29A Trolley Square Shopping Center, Wilmington DE 19806 (on the back side facing Gilpin Ave.) This monster of a sandwhich has Imported Italian Roasted Pork, Broccoli Rabe (aka Rapini), Sharp Provolone Cheese & Red Pepper-Rosemary Aioli. Who can argue with a deli that brings fresh bread every day from from New York City?
The Cuban Sandwich at The Corner Bistro, 3604 Silverside Road, Wilmington DE 19810. Slow Roasted Pork, Smoked Ham, Dill Pickles, Havarti Cheese, Mustard on Scallion Buttered Bread. Their take on the Cuban Sandwich, while not traditional is absolutely delicious.
Banh Mi Boy, 209 E. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711 the owners of the former delicious Saigon Vietnamese restaurant have a real winner in their Banh Mi sandwiches - which is a French baguette filled with your choice of meats, jalapenos, pickled carrots, Daikon cucumber, and fresh cilantro.
The Muffaletta at Cajun Kate's 722 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington DE. 19810 This New Orleans style sandwich is served on bread especially made for them by Serpe's Bakery, features an olive salad direct from New Orleans, and contains Mortadella, Capicolla Ham, Genoa Salami and Provolone Cheese. In case you are wondering, owner Don Applebaum worked for years at Emeril Lagasse's NOLA restaurant in New Orleans and his wife Kate was the former Chef de Cuisine at Harry's Seafood Grill. The restaurant is only open Wednesday to Saturday 11:00 - 8:00 pm but you can also check them out at the Booth's Corner Farmer's Market Friday and Saturday 9:00 - 8:00 pm.
The Bobby at Capriotti's is our own Thanksgiving on a Bun. There are nine locations in Delaware north of the canal, including the original at 510 N. Union St, Wilmington DE 19805. The sandwich features homemade Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Stuffing and Mayo. The Capastrami (Hot Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Russian Dressing and Coleslaw) is also quite decadent.
The Tortas at the La Poblanita at 3804 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington DE 19805 is a Mexican style sandwich with your choice of nine different Meats (everyone I know likes the spicy marinated pork, Al Pastor) spread with Beans, Lettuce, Tomato, and Jalapeno. If you have never tried one, you are in for a filling treat!
The Jack Russell at the Pure Bread Deli, four locations in Delaware and one in nearby Glen Mills PA. The Jack Russell has Chicken, Bacon, Cheddar and Peppercorn dressing on Cheddar Bread. It is a grilled Panini style treat that you definitely do not have to be a dog lover to enjoy.
The Lobster Roll at the Trolley Square Oyster House at 1707 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington DE 19806 is a traditional lobster roll, even better than the ones I've had in Portland, Maine! It has the split top bun, brown butter mayo, spices, lettuce and lots of that key ingredient - fresh lobster meat. The sides are your choice of two kinds of fries or home made potato chips with sea salt. After trying all three, I prefer the fries with Old Bay.
The Tacos al Pastor at Taqueria Jalisco, 1722 W Gilpin Dr., Wilmington DE 19805. this is a no frills eat in/take out place, but the tacos and tortas are excellent and the salsa homemade and fresh. Most of the clients are speaking Spanish, but everyone is enjoying the meal! Don't expect anything fancy or contemporary, just great authentic Mexican Tacos. There is even an attached Mexican Grocery Store for those hard to find treats!
