Is it time to think about those New Years Eve resolutions for 2018? For those of us interested in eating healthy local foods (think organic, but they don't bother to get certified), there is nothing quite like a CSA. When you pick up your "share" (whether full, half), large, small or something custom), you are assured of getting the freshest vegetables (and sometimes herbs) picked at the height of ripeness. There is simply nothing like it! You are eating the way your ancestors did, plus you are supporting the local farmers. It's win, win, win.
Coverdale Farm Preserve by the Delaware Nature Society. This 352 acre farm preserve on Way Road (roughly 1500 feet south of Old Kennett Road) in Greenville has pickups on either Wednesdays (11 am - 6 pm) or Saturdays (9 am - 2 pm) and it's your choice. The CSA is mostly vegetables, herbs, tomatoes (which my wife insists is not a vegetable) and flowers. You also choose a full share ($900) or a half share ($550). The half share is more than enough for two, possibly enough for four. Highland Orchards Farmers Market 1431 Foulk Road, Wilmington 302-478-4042. This is a small family farm operating since 1832. They are flexible in their share offerings - anything from just eggs or it can include honey, bread, apples, cucumbers, 10 lbs of cabbage, etc. Delivery frequency can vary from weekly to biweekly to every 4 weeks. Drop offs can be 300 Delaware Ave in Wilmington, Bear-Glascow YMCA, Brandywine YMCA, Central YMCA, Western YMCA, Harvest Market 7417 Lancaster Pike Hockessin, Highland Orchards, and a host of other locations that are for employees of the location only.
