Westover Hills Real Estate

Westover Hills lies on Kennett Pike (Route 52) just outside the city limits of Wilmington. As such it is the easiest commute to downtown of all of Greenville. In the 19th century there was a railway spur which carried gunpowder from the powder mill at Hagley to Newport. Because of occasional big explosions, the track ran through open areas and avoided residences (or vice versa). When the track was removed in the early 20th century, the real estate community of Westover Hills was born. Captains of industry created custom homes there and the community acquired an excellent reputation (marred a bit during the Great Depression when it was called "Leftover Bills"). Heavilly wooded and lushly landscaped, as only a 90 year old neighborhood can be, this is a community of colonial, Tudor, and French Country styles. Over the years a succession of high profile residents have lived there, including members of the Alfred Einstein and Thomas Edison families. No industry has had more effect on the neighborhood than banking. At one time almost all major banking executives lived here. Now it is much more diverse with representatives from every industry enjoying the company of many retirees. The reasonable lot sizes and the convenience have been attractive to buyers both young and old. The 21 acre George Edmond (chairman of the board of Wilmington Trust Co.) estate in the middle of Westover Hills was subdivided and developed in the mid 90's which even contributed some "new" construction homes.
